Our History

The solemn blessing and Dedication of Holy Sepulcher School took place on May 7, 1960, with the Most Reverend John J. Wright DD., Bishop of Pittsburgh, as celebrant. On August 22, 1960, of the Third Order of the Bernardine Sisters of St. Francis under the direction of Sr. Bonaventa, the first Superior and Principal, came to reside at the parish. The first phase of the school included grades 1 through 4. In 1961, the second phase of the school was constructed, and by 1964, all 8 grades were occupied. The Bernardine Sisters remained in the school until 1989. Eight Bernardine Sisters served as Principals between 1960 and 1989, when the school started to be under the direction of dedicated lay leaders. Over the years, hundreds of people have given hours of service through their time, donations and loving care in order to provide a Catholic education for their children. Many of our graduates have gone on to higher education and are now successful corporate business owners, teachers, lawyers and hold positions in a variety of other professional careers.

While the building structure has remained essentially the same, the teaching techniques, methodology and curriculum have dramatically changed with state and diocesan expectations. Today, each classroom is equipped with a smart board and audio and video technology; teachers are state- and diocesan-accredited.

In 2010, Preschool Programs were added to the school’s curriculum and today the Preschool has dedicated space in a building of its own on the Holy Sepulcher campus. The programs include 3 and 4 year old programs, and a full day Kindergarten readiness program.

Holy Sepulcher School is a special place with a unique caring culture. As a small school, Holy Sepulcher offers students a challenging, compassionate and tight-knit community that embraces rigorous academic standards in the context of a rich Catholic tradition. The school serves children of all faiths and various parishes in the surrounding area. Students receive personal attention from teachers who regard each one of them as special and unique. Faith and values are integrated into the classroom environment, sports and extracurricular activities, and in service to the community. The goal of Holy Sepulcher School is that each child becomes a life-long learner who strives to reach his or her fullest potential.
